Is Grief Showing Up in Ways You Didn't Expect?

Grief rarely looks the way we're told it will. Maybe you expected to cry constantly and instead feel strangely numb. Maybe it's been months or years since your loss and you still find yourself reaching for the phone to call someone who is gone. Maybe you're grieving something other people don't recognize as a loss at all -- a friendship, an identity, the parent you needed but never had, a future you had planned around a person or relationship, or a body that no longer works how it used to.

Grief isn't only about death, though death is often the most visible form. It can follow divorce, estrangement, a diagnosis, a miscarriage, a move, the end of a career, or any rupture that asks you to let go of a version of life you had counted on. Whatever the source, grief and loss counseling can help you make room for a pain that often feels like it has nowhere to go.

When Grief Doesn't Always Follow the Stages

The popular idea of grief moving neatly through stages rarely matches how it actually feels -- more like waves, some enormous and some small, arriving without warning long after you thought you'd made peace. Grieving counseling creates space for that non-linear, unpredictable quality rather than rushing you toward some tidy resolution.

Disenfranchised Grief

Some losses aren't openly acknowledged or supported by the people around you -- an ex-partner, a pet, the child you couldn’t have, a friendship that quietly ended, a life you imagined but never lived. This kind of grief can be some of the loneliest, precisely because it often unfolds without any bereavement support at all.

With the right grief support, you can learn to carry your grief without it consuming every part of your life. Grief, while painful, is sacred.  In grieving we honor the love and the hope that is expressed through our mourning.

Grief Touches Nearly Everyone, Yet We Rarely Talk About It Well

Grief is one of the most universal human experiences and one of the least discussed in any real depth. Most of us receive almost no guidance on how to grieve, only pressure to "move on" within a timeline that suits the people around us rather than our own hearts. Research on bereavement suggests that while most people adapt over time, a significant minority experience prolonged grief that benefits substantially from professional grief therapy [1].

Cultural and family messages often compound the message that we are “doing it wrong” – taking too long, not taking long enough, not showing the right emotions. Many of us were taught that grief should be private, brief, or reserved only for certain "acceptable" losses. This leaves people isolated in the middle of one of the hardest experiences a person can go through, often ashamed of grief that persists or grief for a loss others don't fully understand.

The good news is that with compassionate grief counseling, you don't have to carry this alone or according to anyone else's timeline. There is room here for grief that is messy, delayed, complicated, or still very much alive.

Grief Counseling That Honors Your Loss, However It Looks

Making Space for the Whole Relationship

As a grief counselor working from an attachment-based and somatic perspective, I don't believe grief is a problem to be solved or a phase to be rushed through. It's a relationship -- with a person, an identity, a future -- that continues even after the physical presence is gone, and it deserves space to be explored in its full complexity, including the parts that feel contradictory: love and relief, sorrow and anger, tenderness and guilt.

Working With Grief in the Body

In our sessions, we make room for the whole of what you're carrying, not just the parts that are easy to talk about. Using Internal Family Systems, we can get to know the different parts of you that are grieving in different ways -- the part that wants to talk about your loss constantly, and the part that wants to avoid it entirely; the part still angry, and the part that misses without complication. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy also offers techniques for healing the grief that lives in the body -- in exhaustion, in a hollowed-out chest, in the disorientation of moving through a world that looks the same while everything inside you has changed.

For clients navigating bereavement counseling after the death of someone central to their life, we'll also address the practical disorientation grief brings -- sleep, appetite, memory, the strange logistics of a life reorganized around absence. As your grief therapist, I also work with clients grieving losses that don't fit neatly into "bereavement" -- an estrangement, an ambiguous loss, a life that didn't happen -- building grieving support around your specific loss, not a generic script.

Holding Complicated Feelings Toward the Person You Lost

Not every loss is straightforwardly sad. Grief counseling in my practice makes room for the relationships that were complicated -- a parent who hurt you and whom you still miss, a partner you'd already begun grieving before they died, a friend you lost touch with before losing entirely. Relief, anger, guilt, and love often arrive tangled together, and none of it means you're grieving wrong. Part of my work as a grief therapist is helping you hold that complexity without needing to resolve it into a single, tidily packaged feeling before you're allowed to move forward.
